Bio

Patrick James Bravo is based in Vancouver and obtained his BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design (2016). His works focuses primarily in areas of social practice and community engagement. Though trained in printmaking and sculpture, Bravo works with traditional labour-intensive methods, re-combining objects and environments loaded with previous meaning from art history, the street or the playground. Originally from Italy, his works have been exhibited in Raw-Spectrum at Club 560 Seymour; Art Revolution graffiti exhibition in Concourse gallery, Emily Carr University and Colour G - a Tent work – at the 2014 International Vancouver Folk Music Festival.

Statement

My challenge is for people to observe and interact with my art. I want people to become aware of their own participation in the process of creating meaning from the images and feelings they encounter within the works.

Art and life merge together in my work, whether created for the walls of a gallery, or made for a park or the streets. I aim to engage playfully with viewers and strangers in an attempt to interrupt routines, or to simply make them smile. My work is colourful and whimsical, and strives to provide each viewer with a “moment” to recollect childhood memories or gleeful emotions from a period in life that was more about having fun. I strive to portray childlike perspectives and to spotlight moments of the past, a tactic governed by play and unconventional experience. I use pattern, colour and juxtaposition to make work that has a sense of fun and engage emotions disrupting for a short time our customized social lives, even if darker connections surface.
